After Alain Deneault wrote an exposé of corruption and crime in Africa called Noir Canada, he and his publisher were threatened with a defamation suit by the world’s largest gold mining firm, the Canadian company Barrick Gold. Despite the threat, they still believed public debate was possible, so they decided to proceed with publication. Deneault and his collaborators soon found themselves mired in a legal hell that showed them what 21st-century censorship is all about. For four years, Julien Fréchette patiently followed all the twists and turns of the Noir Canada affair and the debate over strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs). This gripping legal thriller sheds light on major issues of concern to us all. (NFB Canada)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
In conjunction with the London Public Library (londonpubliclibrary.ca), Cinema Politica London (cinemapolitica.org/london) presents the documentary film Silence is Gold, about one of Canada’s largest mining companies attempt to silence an exposé of Canadian mining practices in Africa.
In 2008 Alain Deneault co-wrote Noir Canada: Pillage, corruption et criminalité, a book highly critical of the Canadian mining industry in Africa. Prior its launch, Noir Canada publishers Les Éditions Écosociété Inc. received a letter from Canadian gold mining giant Barrick Gold, threatening legal action for alleged false information and libel. The launch was postponed but not before Écosociété had distributed nearly 2,000 copies of the book. Barrick then filed a libel suit for $6 million against the writers and the publisher.
The case is considered by many to be a prime example of a “strategic lawsuit against public participation”(SLAPP). In 2011 the Quebec Superior Court ruled that "Barrick seems to be trying to intimidate authors", that the suit was "seemingly abusive", and that Barrick must pay the authors and publisher $143,000 to prepare their defense. Later that year Deneault and his team, exhausted by the court proceedings, reached an out of court settlement with Barrick.
During the process, however, a coalition of activists began to push for anti-SLAPP legislation and in 2009 Quebec adopted an anti-SLAPP bill, a landmark piece of legislation protecting freedom of speech in Québec.
For four years film directorJulien Fréchette followed the proceedings, documenting each legal twist and turn, revealing just how far the Canadian mining industry is willing to go to silence criticism of its mining practices.
Professor Lorraine McNeil admits she is not surprised by Barrick Gold’s tactics: “This is not the first time a Canadian mining company is accused of abusive practices”. In fact, members of the indigenous Mayan Q’eqchi’ from Guatemala have filed three lawsuits in Ontario courts against Canadian mining company HudBay Minerals over the brutal and abusive treatment of several of its members. The abuses are alleged to have been committed by mine company security personnel at HudBay’s former mining project in Guatemala.

Silence is Gold raises crucial questions about the limits of free speech, public debate, equal access to justice, and ultimately, our democratic institutions.
Please join us to watch and discuss this important film, which will be screened on Monday, January 12th, 7 pm, at the Central Library, 251 Dundas Street, London, ON.

STOP THE DUMP! Special protest at the quarry
Friday, March 21, 2014 from 3:00 to 4:00 pm, the weekly protest against the dump will focus on the entrance to the Carmeuse property where Carmeuse wants to drain a lake and Walker wants to fill an active quarry with garbage.
Driving north on Embro Road aka Foldens Line from the 401, it is just north of the four way stop at Beachville Rd (which in Ingersoll is called Charles Street).
https://goo.gl/maps/6hZWZ
Like the Arcade Fire concert recently, this gathering has a dress code: come prepared for pond hockey, or fishing, or ice-fishing, or with a boat, oar, paddle, fishing rod, landing net, bird-watching gear and googles, etc.
This proposed dump is next to the Thames River, which flows down through London. Any disturbance to the Thames Watershed affects us all. This garbage, to be dumped right into a quarry which is below the water table, would include Toronto's "residential, industrial, commercial and institutional solid waste, contaminated brownfield soil and asbestos", according to Walker, the landfill company! The quarry leaks like a sieve! The Thames is contaminated enough! Please help stop this incredibly dangerous dump!

Birdbone Theatre's "Tar Sands Dragon Opera" coming to London Feb. 2nd!
Hosted by the London Chapter
of the Council of Canadians
on SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2014
6:00 - 9:00 pm
EAST VILLAGE COFFEEHOUSE
(English and Dundas)
POTLUCK
6:00 pm
(Crockpots can be plugged in.)
PERFORMANCE
7:00 - 9:00 pm
Message from Alison Gayle about the tour:
"WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We will be touring our Tar Sands Dragon Opera (and clown show) along Line 9 the month of February, and we are looking for folks who will host our show in their communities (schools, community halls, living rooms etc.) We would love to connect with as many of the folks involved in Line 9 organizing as possible.
The Tar Sands Dragon Opera is a puppet tragi-comedy featuring the clown hysterics of a bewildered cardboard population struggling to come to terms with the murky convoluted thinkings on Tar Sands expansion and consequent Line 9 reversal. The show will also feature music and dancing by humans, to lighten the occasionally inky mood. The Tar Sands Dragon Opera is a media project. We will learn about the case against the reversal of Line 9 from the communities we perform for, and will allow this to inform our show as we go. We will also make short radio pieces along the way when appropriate.
Alison Gayle, Birdbone Theatre"

Voluntary donations to support the tour will be accepted at the venue or online on the Theatre website.

More Announcements from our Facilitator
Members,
I have news for you on four items.
1. The first issue is we have had a change of date for our monthly meeting. Due to conflict we have had to change just this meeting from Tuesday Oct. 8th to Thursday Oct. 10th at the Tolpuddle CO-OP. Start time is still 7:00PM.
I am putting an agenda together and I should have done by tomorrow at the latest. If anyone has any items that they would like to bring forward, please send them to me ASAP.
2. I missed one event from the last blast. Starting Friday November 15th, a film series brought to you by The Seeds of Hope, the Latin American Canadian Solidarity Association, Heart-Links, Mining Watch, The Centre for Social Concern at King's University College and the Council of Canadians: Extracting the Earth: Canada and Beyond.
It is a free film series about how Canadian and American resource companies are conducting themselves not only in Canada but in Latin American countries as well. Discussions follow the movies.
All films are being shown at the Stevenson-Hunt Room at the Central Public Library.
Friday Nov. 15th, 6:00-10:00PM: London premiere of Gold Fever. A movie about mining in Columbia.
Saturday Nov.16th, 5:30-9:00PM: Films about Canadian and American mining in Peru and Mexico
Sunday Nov. 17th: The Hole Story and films about fracking in Canada.
For more details email LACASA at LACASA.London@gmail.com
3. If anyone is interested in participating in this event: October 19th is the day of the Global Frackdown#2. It is a day to join with people around the world to say no to fracking anywhere. Some chapters are getting involved but most of them are being directly affected by fracking. London has not been affected by fracking yet but with fracking occurring around the Great Lakes basin, it will only be a matter of time. Check out : www.globalfrackdown.org for more details.
4. There has been an interest to try and resurrect the London Environmental Network. It was originally started to try and bring environmental groups together in London and to try and support the actions of other groups and to make sure to try to coordinate events so there wouldn't be five or six environmental events happening on the same day. With what is happening with Pen-Equity, London Hydro being threatened and other issues around London, there has been a jump of people joining the LEN Facebook site. Perhaps it is time that environmental, social justice groups and political groups to come together. Check out the Facebook site (search for London Environmental Network) and lets get the conversation started.

Media and Community members Advisory
For Immediate Release
March 6th, 2013
Speaking tour “Challenging Canada’s international mining practices” arrives next in London, ON
WHAT: Salvadoran activists will be in London, ON to garner support from the Canadian, Latin-American and other conscientious community members for a campaign to make El Salvador the first country to ban metal mining. The event is part of a continent-wide Water Is More Precious than Gold speaking tour that is raising awareness about the negative impact of Canadian mining operations on El Salvador.
WHO: The event features (Vidalina Morales and Sandra Carolina Ascencio), representative(s) from the El Salvadoran National Roundtable against Metallic Mining (the Mesa). Since 2006, the Mesa has brought together hundreds of communities and thousands of people from across El Salvador, including environmental, community-based, research, legal and religious organizations, to successfully halt mining operations in the country and to call for a ban on metal mining.
WHEN & WHERE: The Water Is More Precious than Gold public forum in London, Ontario will be held at East London Public Library (2016 Dundas Street East - near Clarke Side Road and Dundas St. East) *** CHANGED TO ROOM 103 LABATT HALL (LH103), KINGS UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, 266 EPWORTH AVE., LONDON, ONTARIO *** on Saturday, March 16th, 2013 at 3:00pm. The tour is holding events in 20 cities across Canada and the US (full list of cities and dates below), including Vancouver, London, Guelph, Toronto, Ottawa, Peterborough, Halifax, Moncton, and Fredericton. Following the events in Canada, the speaking tour will head south to the US, with talks in Bangor, Portland, New York, Boston, New Jersey, and Washington DC.
WHY: The speaking tour aims to build greater awareness about the issues facing El Salvador and other Latin American countries, challenge the unjust practices of Canadian, US and other mining companies, including Pacific Rim and Goldcorp, and build relationships with groups in North America, including those confronting their own local mining issues. The speaking tour will be followed by an international Fact-Finding Mission to El Salvador on May 9-13, aiming to build awareness around the dangers of mining in El Salvador.
The Mesa is also worried about possible contamination from upstream mining projects just over the border in Guatemala and Honduras. Goldcorp’s Cerro Blanco mine, for example, is located only 18 km from El Salvador in the headwaters of the Lempa River, the main source of water for over 60% of the population of El Salvador.
The event in London, ON is led by the Council of Canadians, London Chapter - El evento en London, ON esta encabezado por el Consejo de Canadienses, sucursal London.
